Win keeps City top of the table

JUDAS Moseamedi scrambled home a dramatic last-gasp winner to keep Cape Town City top of the table as they handed Kaizer Chiefs’ hopes a hammer blow in a dramatic 3-2 triumph at the Cape Town Stadium last night.

It was a scrambled goal in a match characterised by some quality finishes and then some horror misses as both sides played out a full-blooded affair that had the fans on the edge of their seats.

Moseamedi finished off a flick on fellow substitute Sibusiso Masina to score three minutes into stoppage time after City had led 2-1 at half time.

Aubrey Ngoma and Lebogang Manyama scored two brilliant goals for City in the first half, but goalkeeping errors from Shu-Aib Walters allowed Chiefs to come back twice through Siphiwe Tshabalala and Joseph Molongoane.

The full-paced action started almost from the opening whistle as both sides had efforts on goal in the opening six minutes, first Joseph Molongoane for Chiefs and then City’s hard-working midfielder Roland Putsche.

City have a two point lead at the head of the standings but have also played two more matches than Mamelodi Sundowns, who moved up to second.

For sometime it appeared as if Sundowns were going to drop two crucial home points with a pedestrian display but they dug deep to eventually overpower and beat Ajax Cape Town 2-0 in Pretoria.

As championship sides often do, the Brazilians improved from their sluggish first half which irked their impatient supporters to move to second spot on the log with 47 points.

The breakthrough came from the boot of midfielder Percy Tau in the 68th minute after he received the ball in the Ajax danger area from Khama Billiat who got the better of Erwin Isaacs in the middle of the part.

Before he turned hero, Tau was the villain as he was subjected to shouts of displeasure from his own fans who were not happy with the way he squandered many scoring opportunities.

A few minutes later, Billiat could have turned the finisher but missed a sitter from close range as he missed the target after he received the ball from Thapelo Morema with Ajax in disarray at the back.

It was not long before the Brazilians increased their lead and this time it was the turn of Themba Zwane to kiss the back of the net in the 73rd minute when he finished a pass from substitute Anthony Laffor.

Sundowns visit Golden Arrows on Friday while Maritzburg United play host to Cape Town City on Monday.
