St Andrew’s win G’town derby
TWO good first teams created much expectation ahead of the annual Grahamstown derby but, in the end, St Andrew’s executed better on the day to beat Graeme 25-10 on the Somerset Field late on Saturday afternoon.
Graeme started the game extremely well by scoring a well-worked try after Matthew Robertson made a line break and then offloaded to Lelethu Cekiso, who finished off a superb effort.
Thereafter they struggled. St Andrew’s defence was excellent and they forced a turnover in midfield, the penalty converted by Matthew More.
A fantastic break from Charlie Fleming soon after the restart saw More going over under the poles. He also converted to take St Andrew’s to a 10-7 lead.
Graeme levelled the scores with another penalty from the boot of Sivu Ngqiyaza before St Andrew’s regained the lead right on half time with a try by Chulumanco Mngxaso.
In the second half there was a third try for More, who converted for a personal tally of 20 points. One more penalty took the final score to 25-10.
The derby started with the hockey fixtures on Friday night.
St Andrew’s won the three matches, with the first team showing their class.
Graeme were out of their depth against a clinical outfit, but they made St Andrew’s work in the first half, although they lost concentration at times.
St Andrew’s were 2-0 up at half time and piled on the pressure. Four second-half goals meant that St Andrew’s won comfortably 6-0.
