Kingswood f ight back after early onslaught
UNION High travelled to Grahamstown to play Kingswood’s first rugby team on a clear and crisp day at City Lords and were beaten 36-15 in an entertaining game.
Kingswood withstood an early onslaught from Union, who camped in the hosts’ 22m for the first 10 minutes of the match.
But it was then Kingswood’s backs who created the line breaks and fed their supporting players to run in four good tries in the first half, to lead 24-0.
During another good break, the ball was wildly thrown away. Union reacted quickly, kicked the ball downfield and sprinted in a race for the line.
Kingswood then had a player sin-binned for holding back a Union chaser and the visitors scored from the resultant penalty, to make it 24-5 at half time.
Union capitalised after the break with two well-worked tries of their own, with Kingswood down to 14 men.
The second half stuttered a bit, with both sides making errors, until Kingswood ran in two more tries to win the encounter 36-15.
The Kingswood point-scorers were: Tries: Justin Bendeman, Jeff Mutuku, Anele Makongolo, Loyd Dangazele, Kamva Kalipa, Sandiso Charles. Conversions: Anele Makongolo (3)
KINGSWOOD has achieved Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) highest qualification grading afforded for cricket school excellence for last year.
The Blue Chip schools programme is designed to reward schools committed to providing an environment which enables young players to exploit their full potential and become the best cricketers they can be.
Cricket playing schools across the country are measured against the Schools Quality Index (SQI).
Schools that achieve 90% are awarded the official CSA Blue Chip Status for that year. The criteria were: Number of teams per age group, number of matches played, coaching infrastructure and qualifications, facility infrastructure and representation across the school pipeline.
Kingswood is one of only 11 schools in the country to have been awarded the status.
