PE geniuses set for quiz show

Big prizes for winners including trip to Nasa

-

PUPILS from two Port Elizabeth schools will be appearing on upcoming episodes of popular quiz show Nickelodeon’s Genius.

The pupils are Grade 11 pupils Daniella Recchia, Brad Spies and Gareth Pienaar from DF Malherbe High School and Grade 7 pupils Christian Davidson, Ethan John and James Smith, who attend Grey Junior School.

The objective of Nickelodeon’s Genius is to find the team of contestants, aged between nine and 16, who are the brightest maths and science pupils in the country, from both government and private schools.

The pupils from the two schools made it through regional, provincial and national finals which included an intensive one-week TV shooting and production schedule.

Thousands of pupils entered this season of Nickelodeon’s Genius but only 16 teams will get through to the final stages including four “wild card” teams.

As part of the quiz, the children are questioned on a range of topics including physics, algebra, calculus and life sciences.

They also participated in quick-fire quizzes and mental challenges in the search for the 2017 Nickelodeon’s Genius winners.

Nickelodeon’s Genius is sponsored by ABSA MegaU, and supported by the government’s Department of Basic Education (DBE) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST).

The ultimate winners of the contest will receive a R100 000 ABSA MegaU account for each member of the winning team and an unforgettable visit to Nasa’s Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, USA – where they will have lunch with an astronaut. They will also win a trip to Universal Studios.

The winning schools also receive books and educational material worth R30 000, courtesy of Cambridge Publishing.

The team from DF Malherbe will appear on Nickelodeon’s Genius on NickToons (DStv Channel 308) at 2.45pm on June 2, while the team from Grey Junior will appear on June 16.
