- Mogan Segadavan segadavanm@timesmedia.co.za

IN a repeat of last year’s final, Callies beat PE All Stars to pocket the R10 000 winner’s prize in the final of the DB Fine Chemicals and Callies Vets Tournament played at Londt Park on Saturday.

The 13th annual tournament was hosted by Callies.

Teams from across the country competed in the two-day competition.

PE All Stars, made up of former Port Elizabeth players now scattered all over the country, get together once a year to play in the competition.

In the semifinals, Stars beat Rovers Masters from East London 5-4 on penalties after the match ended at 0-0.

In an all-PE semifinal, Callies beat Hearts 1-0.

Unlike last year when Callies won in a penalty shootout, this year’s final was a one-sided affair as the hosts scored an easy 4-0 win to win the prize.

Callies also bagged the individual awards, with Thanduxola Mapapu winning both the top goal-scorer and player of the tournament awards.

Riaan Barth was voted goalkeeper of the tournament

HEARTS and African Leopards, who are separated by goal difference, will battle it out for pole position in the PE Legends Football league tomorrow evening.

After their 7-0 demolition of Priory last week, Hearts will struggle to go on another goal-scoring spree when they play Callies at the Westbourne Oval.

Despite their poor start to the season, Callies are capable of ending Hearts’ unbeaten run, especially after their success in the veteran’s tournament at the weekend.

Leopards could go to the top of the log as they should have an easy match against Westpark, who suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of PE City last week.

After dropping their first point of the season when they were held to a 2-2 draw by NMB Municipality, Kuyga Masters should get back on to the winning trail when they play Old Grey at the Old Grey Club.

Grey went down 4-2 to Leopards in their last match.

Shamrocks, who are tied with Hearts and Leopards but are third on goal difference, face a tough match against NMB Municipality.

Although they are without an outright win against their name, Municipality are a tough nut to crack

Fixtures:

African Leopards v Westpark (Londt Park Sports Club), Hearts v Callies (Westbourne Oval), PE City v Priory (Victoria Park), Shamrocks v NMB Municipality (TBA), Kuyga Masters v Old Grey (Old Grey Sports Club)
