Woodridge dominate in annual derby with VP

WOODRIDGE had a successful weekend against Victoria Park in their annual derby held in Thornhill, winning most of the fixtures in rugby, netball, girls’ and boys’ hockey.

All four of the Woodridge 1st teams secured victories in their fixtures.

In what was predicted to be a close rugby encounter, Woodridge dominated Victoria Park from the start, recording a comfortabl­e 35-7 victory.

After a strong opening 10 minutes from the visitors, Woodridge took control of the game running in four well-worked tries to lead 28-0 at half time.

Overall, it was a dominant display by Woodridge.

Woodridge’s first netball team won a nail- biting encounter.

The team delivered yet another sterling performanc­e and continued persistenc­e and determinat­ion secured them an 18-16 win over their opponents.

The Woodridge first hockey boys showed some good fight and character against Victoria Park.

While the VP goalkeeper showed great reflexes and technique and kept the Woodridge boys at bay for most of the first half, Cuan Kingwill eventually scored, putting Woodridge 1-0 up at half time.

VP equalised early in the second half and Woodridge responded with a second goal from a short corner drag flick by Tommy Bailey.

The VP side again came back strongly and with seven minutes to go the score was 2-2.

Determinat­ion and a final effort from the Woodridge boys enabled Cole Schoeman to score and seal a 3-2 victory.

The girls first hockey team moved the ball around well and defended as a team against Victoria Park.

Woodridge won 3-0 with all three goals being field goals from Caylin Maree, Chumisa Yona and Lauren Booysen.
