Knockout tourney on cards tomorrow

THE Nelson Bay Boxing Organisati­on will host an action-packed two-day tournament for the Eastern Cape Amateur Boxing Organisati­on titles at the Govan Mbeki Multipurpo­se Centre in the Izinyoka township tomorrow.

The tournament will feature 106 boxers in 13 divisions, representi­ng eight Eastern Cape regions.

Looking to showcase his talent will be South African junior flyweight and Africa Zone 4 champion Siyabulela Mpongose.

Nombulelo Didi, of Motherwell, who has a good record at the national competitio­ns and will be graduating from the youth category, will be joining the elite of women boxers at the tournament.

“These championsh­ips will comprise some of the finest boxers in the province,” Nelson Mandela Boxing Organisati­on president Andile Gege said.

“The boxers are hungry to prove themselves and there will be fireworks because each region is hoping to get representa­tion in the team to go the nationals.

“The opportunit­y to host an event like this in the Bay will provide exposure for our amateur boxers and I hope they use this platform to elevate themselves into national stars.”

A team of 28 boxers will be selected for the Eastern Cape at the South African Open Championsh­ips next month.

Boxers will weigh in on their arrival tonight at 8pm and the first bout is scheduled to start at 11am tomorrow.

The tournament will conclude with final rounds on Sunday, starting at 10am.
