Four people arrested as Bay cops recover firearms, car

- Gareth Wilson

TWO stolen firearms and a vehicle were recovered in Nelson Mandela Bay on Tuesday night, leading to the arrest of four people in two separate incidents.

The first led to a man being held during a raid on a house in Uitenhage’s Mandela Village on Tuesday night.

Police spokeswoman Captain Gerda Swart said a man, 27, was arrested after a shotgun was allegedly found wrapped in a blanket and hidden inside the house. The raid, at 9.45pm, followed a tip-off. “A search warrant was executed at a house in East Windvoël Crescent, Mandela Village. A shotgun was found on the premises and the owner arrested,” she said.

Police spokeswoman Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the second incident took place an hour later in Central, Port Elizabeth, when K9 unit members spotted a stolen black Golf.

“K9 unit members noticed a VW Golf driving with its headlights switched off, in Rink Street.

“It was established that the car had been stolen in Kwazakhele.

“When members attempted to stop the car, the driver sped off, leading to the police cornering the car.”

Naidu said two men and a woman in the vehicle were arrested.

“A 9mm pistol, three cellphones and several bank cards were seized.”

The ballistics unit is still trying to determine the origin of the pistol.

Asked whether those arrested were linked to ATM robberies, Naidu said it would form part of the investigation.

The four will appear in various magistrate’s courts today.
