Pearson girls defeat DSG in exciting match

AFTER a scoreless first half, Pearson scored the solitary goal to defeat DSG in an exciting girls’ hockey match in Grahamstow­n at the weekend.

Both teams played good attacking hockey throughout the match, with Pearson upping the ante in the second half to take control.

Playing the game at pace, they forced their opponents onto the back foot, with Ongi Mali again showing excellent form.

She netted Pearson’s winner when a good reverse shot found the back of the box.

Pearson’s defence also stood firm to keep the DSG strikers out of the 23-yard area, with Micaela Giltrow and Cassidy Holmes showing their skill in this department.

New cap Melissa van Wyk demonstrat­ed good strength on the ball, which augurs well for the future as Pearson will be losing 10 matric players at the end of the year.

NETBALL

THE Pearson netball team were outstandin­g this weekend as they demolished DSG 42-18.

Producing a superb exhibition of incisive attacking play and a strong defence, they ran out comprehens­ive winners.

The magnificen­t display of accurate long-range shooting by Demi de Jager, complement­ed by her brilliant all-round play, earned her the player-of-the-match accolade.

It was the perfect end to a run that has seen the team go unbeaten in 10 matches.

The U18B team were involved in an intense battle for domination and it was only in the closing stages that they pulled away to secure a 21-18 win.

A feature of this team is their dogged determinat­ion to never give up, helping them to handle the pressure and to outlast their opponents.

In a solid team performanc­e, Nadine Barnard shone to claim the player-of-the-match award.

The U14As coasted to an impressive 19-3 victory over their DSG counterpar­ts, combining well on attack and defence.

Clarise Moolman stood out as player of the match.

In contrast, the U16As experience­d a disappoint­ing match, going down 13-12.

While Lisa Zwieggelaa­r stood out, the team could just not find their rhythm as they succumbed to a determined DSG outfit.
