Eastern Cape women win gold
THE Eastern Cape women’s team showed excellent form to win the gold medal in the interprovincial table tennis tournament in Klerksdorp last week.
Coming up against top seeds Gauteng Central in the final, the sides were involved in a tense battle.
However, the East Cape women showed their mettle to emerge 3-2 winners.
The team comprised Xiuyan Li, (Nelson Mandela Bay) Eugene Stallenberg (Nelson Mandela Bay), Dawn Fontuin (Queenstown) and Khanyisa Mngoma (OR Tambo).
They overcame strong opposition on their way to topping their round-robin group before defeating Umgungundlovu (Maritzburg) in the semifinals.
In addition, Li won a bronze medal in the women’s singles, as well as in the doubles where she partnered Stallenberg.
In the Nelson Mandela Bay premier league this week, Aryan B easily defeated Livvie Alumni A 8-3 despite Elton Bloemetjie (Livvie Alumni) winning all his games.
In the first league Wynand van Eyk, John du Plessis and Ntsikelelo Swankazi (Rockets A) combined well to defeat Madibaz C 11-0.
Rockets B edged home 6-5 in a tight contest against Madibaz B, while Callies B beat Despatch A 7-4, with Shaun Domingo and John Julius unbeaten.
Aryan D easily handled Livvie Alumni B 8-3, with Younus Choonara their star player.
In the second league, Despatch B showed no mercy, defeating CSL 9-2 and Callies C were too strong for Madibaz D, winning 10-1. Shannon Whitebooi and Kenan Abrahams were in top form for Callies.
With Stallenberg and Ashley Human dominant, Rockets C easily defeated Livvie Alumni C 9-2.
Aryan E edged out Callies D 6-5 in a catch-up game and Rockets C comfortably beat Aryan E (10-1).
