Westering outplay Alex to thrash them at home

WESTERING produced a dominant display of rugby to thrash Alexander Road 67-17 in their schools rugby encounter at Westering High on Saturday.

The hosts were relentless as they ran in 11 tries, scored mostly by their superior backs.

The teams had met at Alex in May and that game resulted in a hard-fought, evenly contested 19-15 win for Westering.

But Saturday’s result was a completely different beast, as visitors Alex were outplayed in most areas of the game.

Westering’s forwards secured an avalanche of good ball for their backline players to run amok both through midfield and out wide.

The home team scored in the second minute of the game, then ran in four more tries while taking a 31-10 lead at half time.

Six second-half tries completed the rout with standout flyhalf Baphelele Pango kicking five conversions and David Jon another.

Pango was superb for his team and dictated matters with good skill and a calm head.

He was rewarded with a try for his efforts to complete a personal haul of 15 points.

Captain and No 8 Siviwe Manyathi was strong with the ball in hand and led from the front while scoring two tries.

Left wing Onika Booi also scored a brace, as did fullback Sim Jekwa.

Scrumhalf Thabang Boyce, centre Sisanda Matlali, right wing Aviwe Mama and replacement David Jin also dotted down.

Although outgunned for most of the game, Alex did not throw in the towel and made good use of their limited opportunities to score three of their own tries through captain and flank Keagan Singh, left wing Siya Sandi and centre Kade Gerber.

Fullback Garth van Antwerp kicked one conversion.

Otto v Framesby

AFTER two losses at home, Framesby enjoyed a huge away victory against Otto du Plessis on Saturday.

Framesby beat Otto 117-7 in a somewhat futile exercise, although the winning side used the opportunity to test a new, more adventurous game plan.

A much bigger test awaits Framesby on Saturday when they travel to Riversdale to take on Oakdale Agricultural High.

Framesby ran in 19 tries against the hapless Otto.

There were hat-tricks for Desmick Kleinbooi (flank), Andre Gerber (scrumhalf) and Grayson Ditlow (wing).
