Tight contests at sports derby

ALEXANDER Road and Victoria Park enjoyed a number of typically tight contests in their annual winter sports derby on Saturday.

On the hockey astro, the Alex girls dominated, winning all their games.

The VP first boys’ team took the honours, while the second team match finished in a draw.

The girls’ soccer was an evenly matched affair, with each school clocking up a win.

Alex’s netball teams won all but one of their matches, while the rugby was far closer.

VP were victorious in all the matches, except for the first team clash, which Alex won by one point in a thrilling game.

The U15A soccer match was keenly contested with a scoreline of 2-2 until late in the game when a flurry of goals saw VP secure a 5-2 win.

The second team match was also a close affair, with Alex scoring from a penalty early in the game.

VP, however, overcame this setback to squeeze in a 2-1 victory.

The first team clash saw VP take the game to Alex, who defended well in a match of high standards and good spirit.

VP opened the scoring when they played wide from a free kick. The resultant cross was securely met with a good header to make it 1-0 late in the first half.

In the second half, Alex changed tactics, moving on to the attack more, but they were denied quality possession by their opponents.

In the end, a last-minute goal secured VP a 2-0 victory.

The last game of the day was the U16A soccer clash which developed into an entertaini­ng match.

Alex’s Adnaan Safedien scored a spectacula­r longrange free kick for Alex to run out 1-0 winners.
