Youngsters show skills at U13 tournament
ABOUT 200 children from the New Brighton Football Association (Nebfa) participated in the sixth annual U13 Build it tournament at the New Brighton Oval Stadium on Saturday.
The tournament featured 10 schools and six Local Football Association (LFA) clubs from Motherwell.
It kicked off with a coaching clinic led by former professional player Luntu Mazana, who taught the boys basic skills on ball control and setpiece tactics.
Samuel Nongongo Primary school dominated the tournament with an average of two goals in their roundrobin games.
All eyes were on Dodgers FC player Lihlumelo Magaqa, who displayed brilliant dribbling and passing skills.
Nebfa deputy president Mike Mambara said: “The tournament is a great platform for these young boys to display what they have to offer.
“We take a lot of pride in the event because we believe in development.
“We are also one of the few LFAs that involve schools and community clubs, because some children play for both schools and clubs.
“This programme means a lot to the children because they get to build relationships with other young players.”
Nelson Mandela Bay Safa deputy president Nomonde Makuleni said: “There was a lot of talent displayed by the children in this year’s tournament.
“We were very impressed with the level of skill and technique that these children possess.
“The support shown by the parents is commendable and it is clear that it motivates the children to take up football.”
The tournament was, however, postponed after the round-robin stage due to poor light.
The semifinals will see Ben Sinuka Primary School taking on Dodgers FC, with Samuel Nongongo up against Bold Tigers FC at the New Brighton Oval at 3pm tomorrow.
Having had eight boys from the Eastern Cape region chosen by SuperSport United scouts last year, the tournament hopes to produce at least 20 players who have a chance of joining one of the country’s major clubs.
