Grey High start season in great form

PE school win all three festival games

-

GREY High made a good start to their season, winning all three of their games at the Pam Golding Properties Pearson Cricket Festival. The opening game was a Twenty20 match against Potchefstroom Gymnasium.

Grey batted first and after a slow start, LJ du Preez scored an aggressive half-century and Tiaan van Vuuren an undefeated 41 to take them to a more-than-respectable 150/6.

The Grey bowlers and fielders excelled to bowl the visitors out for a paltry 46 to win by 104 runs.

On the second day, Grey won the toss and elected to bat against Hudson Park from East London.

They were soon in trouble at 9/3, but a good 85 from Heath Richards, and 49 from Luke Beaufort, steadied the ship as they put on a century stand for the fourth wicket.

Du Preez was again in the runs, hitting some big sixes in his second half-century of the festival to see Grey to a good total of 221/8.

Operating with the new ball, Van Vuuren bowled quickly to wreck the Hudson Park innings, claiming five wickets.

Hudson fought bravely to try to draw the game, but Grey finally got the last wicket with only a few overs to spare.

On the final day of the festival, Daniel Pienaar won the toss and sent Grey in to bat in a limited overs match.

Opening batsman Elnathan Meiri, who represented the SA Maccabi team at the Maccabi Games in the winter, scored a superb 117.

Batting at No 4, Tristan Stubbs weighed in with a half-century to get Grey to a daunting total of 269.

Daniel Pienaar showed resistance at first but then folded, being dismissed for just 92 as Sean Callaghan picked 3/11.

WOODRIDGE

WOODRIDGE had a successful Pam Golding Properties Pearson Cricket Festival, winning their two limited overs fixtures and drawing the time game.

With a fairly young team and no matric pupils playing, Woodridge defeated Union High by 54 runs in their Twenty20 clash on Thursday.

The highlight of this match was an outstanding batting performance by Andrew Christodoulou, who scored 95 out of the hosts’ total of 165/4.

Woodridge then restricted Union to 111/5, winning comfortably by 54 runs.

On Friday, Woodridge played Daniel Pienaar and put them in to bat.

The Uitenhage side only managed 185/9 in 75 overs, to which Woodridge had replied with 125/5 when bad light stopped play for the match to end in a tame draw.

On Saturday, Woodridge played Somerset from the Western Cape.

The visitors won the toss and put Woodridge in to bat which turned out to be the wrong decision as the hosts took full advantage to amass 315/6 in 50 overs.

Elian Booysen top-scored with 68 and other good contributions came from Shannon McTiffin (65), Cole Schoeman (57no) and Mikhail Lindoor (56).

Somerset were all out for 178 .
