Art auction with heart

Student fundraiser to help disabled kids

-

A GROUP of Nelson Mandela University students are presenting Umthombo Experience, a creative auction featuring music, poetry and art, at the Bird Street campus art gallery on Saturday September 23.

The media, communications and culture student group, Imvano Public Relations and Advertising, is hosting the Umthombo Experience to raise funds for the #IAmAble campaign, which it has been running for several months.

The campaign aims to create awareness and raise funds for the Windvogel non-profit organisation, Ithemba Special Day Care Centre.

Art pieces to be auctioned in aid of the NGO include paintings, sculptures and other handcrafted works by fine art students, as well as other Bay artists.

Each item has been specifically created for this initiative.

The student organisers say they hope the Umthombo Experience will provide guests with a “modern and exciting version of a museum”, while also raising funds for a deserving beneficiary.

Ithemba Special Day Care Centre is an educational facility in the northern areas.

The school offers basic education to children living with mental and physical disabilities, from the ages of six to 18.

The centre, which enrolls children from disadvantaged backgrounds, faces numerous financial challenges. The auction will also include speakers who will highlight issues related to disability discrimination.

The organisers hope this will “conscientise the attendees about the struggles of people living with disabilities”.

Umthombo Experience will start at 7pm.
