What is happening with land in Summerstrand?

- Paul July, Port Elizabeth

CAN anyone with knowledge, be it from the department of human settlements, the mayor’s office or even the general public, shed some light on what is likely to happen with the huge, well-demarcated vacant piece of land in Summerstrand behind the NMU (North Campus) and east of Gomery Avenue.

This really bothers me in that this area has become a dumping site, despite it being partially cordoned off and a security company being on guard.

The underground infrastructure is being vandalised and even street signs are fading.

As this is a bushy area, it will soon attract a lot of undesirable inhabitants and activities.

If I remember correctly, only a few plots, 10 to be exact, went out to tender for the public in October 2011, and ever since, nothing has been happening.

Does the municipality have any plans in place for this area?

Are there perhaps negotiations taking place with developers behind the scenes that we, the general public, don’t know about?

Will this be a student village or a low-cost housing settlement, since there were such rumours a few years ago?

This is a real shame as this has become a wasted resource which could bring in much-needed income for the municipality.

I was hoping that the DA- led coalition would do something about when it took over the metro.

Furthermore, there are a lot of genuine potential buyers looking for vacant plots to build homes for their families.

Hope someone will clarify the situation.
