See event’s positive side

-

DEAR Trevor Davies, the “sea event” you refer to in your letter, “Sea event closes beach to the public” (November 8), is the aQuelle Ocean Racing Series, Africa’s largest family beach event, unique to Nelson Mandela Bay and managed by Zsports Events NPC.

Are you, Sir, just inquiring if the organisers pay our municipality for the use of the beach and parking, or are you put out by the fact that “your beach and parking area” is not as accessible as to how you would like it to be every fortnight for a period of three months.

With so much negativity around, let’s try to put a positive spin on this event.

Beach walks and runs for all ages (as young as six years old), gender and colour can be entered while swimmers of all ages, gender and colour can enter the swimming events ranging from 400m up to 3km – that’s around “some buoys”, as you put it (entrance fees required).

Having attended these events quite regularly I find the vibe/atmosphere to be very enjoyable, to say the least.

The broad smiles on the young kids’ faces is a joy to behold when they receive their medals for being “on the podium” and having their photos taken or receiving the lucky draw prizes available, put up by various companies in the Eastern Cape who rightfully get exposure.

Doesn’t this type of event promote health and fitness, which surely nowadays is a big positive?

Don’t the restaurants in the area have a spin-off from the events?

Does this event not promote family unity?

Sir, I feel you are being self-indulgent. Look on the bright side of life and live a little!

These events are done and dusted by 11am at the latest.

PS I am not attached to the sponsors or organisers in any way or form.

Del Mangan, Broadwood, Port Elizabeth
