Sarel back at Scribante, aged 71

-

LEGENDARY multiple South African rally and race champion Sarel Van der Merwe, also known as “Supervan”, will make a welcome return to Aldo Scribante Raceway next weekend to take part in the bumper race meeting for which more than 200 entries have been received so far.

“Supervan”, now 71, will be partaking in the historic and retro racing class next Saturday, November 18, and will be driving a high-powered Mazda RX 2 Rotary race car.

History will be made in the process as this will be Van der Merwe’s final appearance after a long career in the sport and with many national and international titles to his name.

The event will start with sprint races at 9am for motorcycles and cars, with the afternoon to be filled with motorcycle endurance races made up of the Klinicare PE 100 of 20 laps for historic, Powersport, KTM, masters and breakfast run riders.

This will be followed by the Old Mutual International 40 lap PE 200 which will feature the high-speed 600cc, BOTTs and Unlimited Riders.

Then, at 6pm, the circuit will be filled to its permitted capacity of 36 cars for the start of the Midas three-hour endurance race, which will finish at 9pm.

In all the endurance races, the competitors will have to make at least one compulsory pit stop that will see driver and rider changes while vehicles are being refueled and tyres changed.

Technicians will have to work against the clock to get the competitors back on track as soon as possible.

The public is invited to come along and support these riders and drivers, who will be sure to put on a spectacular show.

Entry at the gate is R30 per person, with children under the age of 12 getting in for free.

There will be catering facilities, as well as a full bar and braai services available.

Racing will go on until late so fans are urged to bring along their deck chairs and gazebos to make a full day’s outing of it.
