Triumph over Salem puts Willows in first spot

THE Willows Cricket Club put an end to Salem’s unbeaten run in the Grahamstow­n first league when they defeated them by five wickets at Salem on Saturday.

The win saw Willows moving to the top position in the league.

Deciding to bowl first, Willows opening bowler Cole Wessels made an early breakthrou­gh when he took two wickets with the score on 12.

Then leading league run-scorer Nicholas Zimmerman showed his sublime form with a classy 57 (11 fours, one six).

Robert van der Merwe (28) and Leard King (21) also chipped in with the bat, but Salem could only manage 167, being dismissed in 37.1 overs.

Thandisile Nqowana (4/28), Melville Daniels (3/50) and Wessels (2/26) bowled brilliantl­y for Willows.

The visitors made a slow start, losing a wicket with the score on 11.

However, Seviano Jasson (29) and Abner Accom (77, 10 fours, one six) put on 64 runs for the second wicket. Daniels (30) was also in good touch. Zimmerman (3/21) and King (2/41) took all the wickets as Willows reached 169/5 in 39.5 overs.

Manley Flats stunned home side Cuylervill­e with a fine 20-run win in their Bathurst first-league encounter.

Manleys scored 225/9, thanks to a magnificen­t 91 not out (eight fours, one six) by young Chris Gleaves.

Good support came from Francois Van Rooyen (31) and Andrew Marshall (26).

The main wicket-takers for Cuylervill­e were Charlie Muir (2/41), and Steven Gornal (2/43).

Manleys bowled Cuylervill­e out for 205 in 45.1 overs, with Richard Muir (58), Niel van der Linde (49) and Muir (48) providing the bulk of the runs.

Francois van Rooyen (4/41), Garvin Dampies (3/37) and Andrew Marshall (2/50) did the damage for Manleys.

Home team Sidbury claimed a hard-fought 20-run win over Makana after making just 167 in their innings.

Hugh Oxenham held the Sidbury innings together with his knock of 96 and Jason Snyman contribute­d 27.

Peter Gradwell (4/25) and Wade Golightly (4/6) then did the main damage as Makana were dismissed for 147.

The St Andrew’s second team recorded a massive 277-run win over Station Hill after skittling their opponents for 77.

Roy Stoddart (90), Miles Danckwerts (56), Bradley van Heerden (52 not out) and Joss McGregor (48) were outstandin­g with the bat as the schoolboys made 354/6.

Southwell claimed a hard-fought 68-run win over Port Alfred at home after totalling just 171.

Rainbows won by 226 runs Salem 150/8 (I Botha 3/35, G Butt 2/18); Kenton 151/3 (V Cook 57no, C Groenewald 27, R Pittaway 2/25). Kenton won by 7 wickets
