Another Super 8 win for Bouwer
EASTERN Province’s Kaylin Bouwer annexed her second straight Growthpoint Super 8 tennis title when she triumphed in the final of the Eastern Province leg at PE Lawn Tennis Club yesterday.
In a two-hour showdown with tough Western Cape opponent Bianca Wolmarans, the top-seeded Pearson High star won 7-6 6-2 to add to the Strand tournament she claimed last month.
She was joined on the winner’s podium by men’s open winner Ryan Little, who defeated Samuel Townes in the final.
It was a fine effort by the men’s champion as he went through the week without dropping a set.
Bouwer was pushed all the way by Wolmarans, who lost her serve to trail 6-5 in the opening set before fighting back to force a tiebreaker.
In that first set decider, Bouwer took a telling 5-2 lead and although her opponent kept fighting all the way, she kept her nose in front to take the breaker 7-5.
The players then sparred strongly to reach 2-2 before Bouwer finally managed to create some breathing space by building a significant 5-2 lead.
Yet none of the games was easily won and full credit must go to Wolmarans for the way she kept fighting to try to get back into the match.
With some of the pressure off, Bouwer was able to dominate the final game of the match, pulling off a stream of winners as she broke her opponent’s serve to love for another well-deserved victory.
