Contrasting victories for St Andrew’s

Rivals Kingswood beaten by 119 runs while T20 match goes down to wire

-

ST ANDREW’S scored contrasting victories over their Grahamstown rivals, Kingswood and Graeme, in cricket matches played over the last week. On Saturday, facing a Kingswood team without some of their Grade 12s, who were at a prefects’ camp, St Andrew’s powered their way to 264/3, setting up victory by 119 runs.

Kingswood, who decided to field first, enjoyed some swing with the new ball, but St Andrew’s batsmen Peter Jarvis and Guy Rushmere stayed patient to steer them to 94/2 after 25 overs.

The partnership flourished as the innings progressed, with the pair compiling a fluent 186-run stand for the third wicket.

Jarvis’s excellent 132 not out came in his 100th match. Rushmere contributed a fine 69.

Early wickets for St Andrew’s opening bowlers Daniel Erasmus (3/19) and Ryan Ford (3/13) made it tough for the Kingswood middle-order.

Josh von Holdt responded well with a blazing 53 not out, but it was not enough on the day as St Andrew’s bowled them out for 145.

St Andrew’s and Graeme put on a superb display in their Cricket South Africa T20 competition match on Lower Field at St Andrew’s.

The home team posted a competitive 146/7 in their 20 overs, with Rushmere and Murray Wilson compiling a mature 100-run partnership off 89 balls.

Graeme lost three early wickets which made it a tough run chase.

Mark Amm was, however, up for the challenge and smashed a magnificent 71 not out off 45 balls.

In the end, it was not enough as St Andrew’s won a quality game of cricket by 13 runs.

WATER POLO

The new-look St Andrew’s water polo team have had an impressive start to their season, defeating Kingswood and then competing well in the Grey High quadrangular.

Following their comfortable 10-0 win against Kingswood, St Andrew’s faced a tricky Pearson outfit in their first match at Grey.

From the start, they showed attacking intent, forcing the Pearson defence to work hard.

Not to be outdone, the Pearson team started to apply their own pressure but were met by an in-form Nicholas Sutherland, who was almost acrobatic around the goals.

Going into the last chukka, St Andrew’s led 6-2, but eventually ran out narrow 7-6 victors.

They next faced the in-form Selborne team and the match was evenly posed at half time, with a score of 5-5.

St Andrew’s pushed hard in the final two chukkas to secure a notable 10-7 win.

Paul Roos Gymnasium, from Stellenbosch, proved to be an extremely physical and skilled side.

The Blues worked hard and played some scintillating water polo to win 10-6.

In the final match of the day, they came up against the highly rated Grey High team.

St Andrew’s started slowly and allowed Grey to score some easy goals.

But as the game progressed the Blues grew in confidence and started to claw their way back into the game.

However, St Andrew’s eventually lost an enthralling match 9-7.
