Event hijacked for own benefit

- Michael, Port Elizabeth

REDHOUSE resident’s letter, “Sundays event not the same mile” (February 13), refers.

I could not agree more.

When the venue was changed in 2010 I contacted a member of the Redhouse committee and voiced my concern about this same issue.

Unfortunately I did not hear anything further from the committee.

The race has been hijacked by tourism, local politicians and, of course, by a well-known retailer for their own advertising benefit.

They are to my mind using false information in the advertising of this race as being the historic Redhouse mile.

Besides the venue, the race itself is not in its original format.

Interestingly enough the latest reports indicate that the river’s condition, which was the main reason why it was not held anymore at Redhouse, has improved since 2010.

Maybe we may see this historic race reinstated and the true 86th race and more held thereafter.
