Pioneers turn corner

DESPATCH Pioneers scored a resounding 3-1 win over PE Sundowns in a Safa-NMB SAB League match in New Brighton.

The teams went into the weekend’s match at the Chevrolet Stadium with Sundowns third and Pioneers 17th, one place up from the bottom of the log.

Pioneers came out of the starting bock firing on all cylinders on Saturday and were all over their opponents.

However, it was only after the break that they managed to find the net.

Bongani Bekwa struck twice within five minutes, before Luvuyo Mto Gewu killed off the game.

Sundowns dropped down from third to sixth place on the log, while Pioneers moved up three places to 14th.

On Sunday, Pioneers put in another sparking performanc­e to draw 2-2 with log-leaders Morning Stars.

Bekwa scored once again with Abongile Plaatjies adding the second.

Meanwhile, NMU Madibaz became the new log leaders, with maximum points from a double header.

On Friday evening, they beat Young Killers 2-1 and on Saturday defeated Camper United 1-0.

Arch-rivals Hearts followed up a 1-0 win over Young Killers in a midweek fixture with a 2-1 victory over Golden Aces and are now second on the log, a point behind the students.

Cleshe Campbell scored both goals for Hearts against Aces. He would have had a hat-trick, but for a disallowed goal.

Previous log-leaders Morning Stars slip down to third, despite a 2-0 triumph over Highland Spurs.

Major Chiefs scored the biggest win of the weekend, thrashing Amarahamba United 5-1 to remain fourth.

Fairview Rovers beat Young Ideas 2-1, to tie with Chiefs.

Roaring Tigers had a blast, beating Ideas 3-1 and drawing 1-1 with FC Winners, to move away from relegation.
