Southwell among G’town winners

-

SOUTHWELL and Cuylerville recorded impressive victories in the Grahamstown Cricket Board first league at the weekend, defeating Port Alfred and Manley Flats respectively.

The race to clinch the first league title between Southwell and Cuylerville will go down to the wire as they face each other in the last fixture of the season at Southwell.

Southwell have 29 points and Cuylerville 26, so Cuylerville will have to win to take the league title.

Southwell (17 points) can also win the Bathurst league if they beat St Andrew’s in their last fixture tomorrow.

There are several fixtures left for the GCB second league, where the race is heating up among Rainbows (40), Station Hill (38), Shrews (35) and Cuylerville (33).

Cuylerville were on a mission to win with a bonus point when they took on Manley last weekend.

It was, however, not so easy as they had to fight hard for their three-wicket victory.

Batting first, Manley were dismissed for 155, captain Francois van Rooyen top-scoring with a fine 40. He was supported by Andrew Marshall (28) and Bryn Wakeford (28).

Charlie Muir was the pick of the Cuylerville bowlers with impressive figures of 5/25. Taylor Ntukela and James Renton picked up two wickets apiece.

Cuylerville lost early wickets as Manley strived to record an upset, but brothers Brandon (33) and Kyle Handley (32) swung things back into Cuylerville’s favour.

Sidbury posted a huge 313/6 against home side Salem. Salem were eventually bowled out for 162, Chris van der Meulen making 48. Wade Golightly (4/39) was Sidbury’s best bowler. Southwell had a comfortable 119-run win over Port Alfred after making 219/9 on a slow pitch.
