ASA mulls youth competition
ATHLETICS SA president Aleck Skhosana has revealed they are mulling over hosting a youth competition to give promising athletes an opportunity to progress to senior level.
South African athletes impressed during the IAAF World U18 championships in Kenya last year and Skhosana said they would benefit from taking part in a strength-versus-strength competition where they would invite other talented athletes from around the world.
Retshidisitswe Mlenga won gold in the 200m‚ Tshenolo Lemao won gold in the 100m and Sokwakhana Zazini won the 400m hurdles in Nairobi and Skhosana said it would be a travesty if they were not helped to fulfil their potential.
Other gold winners in the U18 championships were Breyton Poole in high jump and Zeney van der Walt in the women’s 400m hurdles while there were three silver and as many bronze medals as South Africa ended on top of the medal standings with 11.
