Good weekend for tail-enders Winners with two big victories

- Mogan Segadavan

THE tails continued to wag the dogs in the Safa SAB League at the weekend with FC Winners beating the top two teams in the league to move away from the relegation zone for the first time this season.

On Saturday, Winners beat Major Chiefs, who are second on the log, 1-0.

The following day, they proved that the win was no fluke by scoring a shock 2-0 win over log-leaders NMMU Madibaz at the Mawabo Dyubhe Stadium in KwaDwesi.

With the top three teams dropping points, the position at the top of the log remains unchanged.

On Saturday, Sachin Rautenbach put Madibaz 1-0 ahead with a tremendous strike from outside the area. But the lead was short-lived as Motherwell were on level terms within a minute.

Kaleb Turner snatched maximum points in the dying minutes of the game.

Despite controlling the game for long periods on Sunday, the students conceded two late goals to lose to Winners.

Chiefs recovered from their defeat by Winners on Saturday to thrash Mabayibone Strikers 3-0.

Ikamva movers, who are third, drew 2-2 with Amarhamba United on Friday evening and lost 2-0 to Young Killers the following day.

Golden Aces, who are just two places away from the bottom of the log, were thrashed 3-0 by Fairview Rovers but edged out highly ranked PE Sundowns 1-0.

Tailenders Mabayibone Strikers beat fellow stragglers Amarhamba 1-0 and were thumped 3-0 by Major Chiefs.

On Friday evening, Hearts beat Morning Stars 2-1.

To cap a disappointing weekend for Stars, they drew 1-1 with Despatch Pioneers.

Hearts drew with Young Killers by the same margin.

Both teams started the year at the top but are now likely to finish the season as an also-rans clash.

Motherwell recovered from their defeat by Madibaz to score the biggest win of the weekend, thrashing Highland Spurs 4-1.
