TODAY IN HISTORY
1879: The Anglo-Zulu War battle of Kambula takes place in which British troops drive off a 20 000-strong Zulu army. 1985: Political activist Mvulane Bheki, 18, dies of brain injuries from alleged police violence while awaiting trial. A man detained with him later recounted how Mvulane had been beaten and trampled on by the police. 1988: Dulcie September, pictured, the ANC representative in France, Luxembourg and Switzerland, is assassinated in Paris, allegedly by an SADF hitman. 1990: The ANC calls off a peace rally to be held with the IFP, scheduled for April 2 in KwaZulu-Natal, in view of hostility between the two rival parties.
