Hot shots Hotspurs go down to Helenvale

NORTHERN Areas Football Associatio­n-affiliated teams were in action, contesting the opening round of the Mayoral Cup, on Sunday.

Table-toppers Hotspurs were dealt a harsh blow as they went down 3-0 to league companions Helenvale United.

Glenville got back to winning ways as they made hard work of their 2-1 win over Blackpool.

In other results, Bay City beat East Side 3-1, while Swallows overcame a resilient Warriors team 1-0. In a tough contest, West Lake overcame Lads 2-1 and Ebenezer defeated Apex United 3-1.

Ramblers, who will take a month-long break from soccer to observe the month of Ramadaan, also picked up a win when they saw off Wolves by 2-0.

Only seven of the 16 scheduled matches ended in results – matches between Lakeshire and Shooting Stars, Saints and KS Spurs, and Booysen Pride and Chatty were not played.

Six fixtures had walkovers as Fairdene, Fairview Rovers, Park United, Rangers, Sibanye and Stardrift all progressed to the next round.

Earlier on Saturday, Hotspurs consolidat­ed their position atop the Nafa Premier League table, thanks to a hard-fought 2-1 win over Rangers.

Other results saw second-placed Fairview Rovers claim a valuable 2-1 win over Fairdene to keep the pressure on the league’s top side.

Park United are third, four points off the top of the log, after beating Stardrift 2-0 on Saturday.
