Brandwag walk all over Muir

St Andrew’s triumph against Daniel Pienaar in physical encounter

-

BRANDWAG ran in nine tries to one for an easy 57-5 victory over Uitenhage rivals Muir on Muir’s Ellis field at the weekend. In their last few games, Brandwag have been building a reputation for being a second-half team and Saturday proved no exception. The half-time score was 5-5. Muir eighth man Athenkosi Jack scored first after five minutes. Muir played superb rugby in the first half.

The pack proved competitive in the lineouts and defended well around the fringes.

Muir’s backs clearly had ample pace, but their opportunities were just too few and far between.

Brandwag captain Fergus Matola scored the equaliser after 10 minutes in a first half which produced little further excitement.

In the second half, Brandwag ran away with the game.

Numerous bursts of individual brilliance produced line breaks that led to eight runaway tries.

Brandwag’s tries were scored by Matola, scrumhalf Octavian Muller (2), eighth man Ryben Dupont, outside centre Justin Niemand (2), wing Feri Effenaar (2) and prop Jason Fouche.

For the home side, lock Robert McEwan and the halfback pairing of Derlano Terblanche (9) and Matthew Mahood (10) stood out for consistency and a high work rate.

On Brandwag’s side, newcomer Dupont proved himself at eighth man, hooker Zuki Sali delivered another immense performance and fullback Dano Swart kicked six conversions in testing conditions, with the wind at Muir as unpredictable as ever. IN their first fixture against Daniel Pienaar in some years, St Andrew’s ran out 43-7 winners in a physical, stop-start affair on Lower Field in Grahamstown on Saturday.

The Uitenhage visitors started brightly and, with St Andrew’s making a number of defensive errors, it was Daniel Pienaar that opened the scoring with a try out wide, which was converted.

Tries from Bame Malesu, Anthony More, William McAdam, Ryan Ford and eighthman Miles Danckwerts, with conversions by Ryan Thompson, saw St Andrew’s end comfortable 43-7 winners.
