CONVICTED CRIMINAL CAN SIT IN COUNCIL

ANDILE Lungisa: how can this “out on bail” convicted criminal be allowed to vote in council on the budget? Being a convicted felon, is he allowed to travel outside the PE boundaries to support fellow [alleged] criminal Jacob Zuma in his appeal on crimes against all in South Africa?

PROUD OF STREET PATROL

I AM so proud of Velile Mfunda and members of the New Brighton neighbourhood watch who patrol the streets to ensure people feel more comfortable and safe while waiting for public transport (“Taking back their township”, June 11). Could our men in the northern areas not follow their example?

NO HELP FROM POLICE

“CYCLIST badly injured in Heugh Road attack”, June 11): the cyclist won’t get help from SAPS. On February 1 I was robbed of my bicycle and everything else. No response from the police up until today.

NEED TO STAND TOGETHER

TWO thugs are off the streets (“Beachfront heroes nail armed thugs”, June 8). If we could stand together in fighting crime like David Jali and Marselle van der Mescht, PE would really remain a friendly city and attract more tourists.

THANKS FOR GOOD SERVICE

THANK you Sassa for good service. I recently took my wife to the Sassa offices in Community Road, Walmer to hand in forms for her pension to be sent directly to her bank account. From the time of entering the building to the time of leaving, I think we were there for approximately 15 minutes. Thank you to the two women who were so very helpful.

RATHER REMEMBER SCHREINER’S WORDS

“THINK on these things” (“Words to consider, inspire”, June 8) by Birdy: people who say Ashwin Willemse, or anyone for that matter, must chant “sticks and stones” or agree that “no one can make you feel inferior without your consent” surely lack empathy? According to Daniel Goleman, people who lack empathy have low emotional intelligence! His book is Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ.

There is some controversy about whether the quote, “no one can make you feel inferior without your consent” belongs to Eleanor Roosevelt and it seems it is often quoted out of context. So why not rather go with Olive Schreiner, who said, “My feeling is that there is nothing in life but refraining from hurting others and comforting those that are sad”.
