CHIPPA UNITED boss Siviwe Mpengesi has continued his spending spree by signing Jomo Cosmos winger Tebogo Makobela for the new Premier Soccer League season.

Chippa revealed their capture of Makobela on their social media platforms on Tuesday, bringing to eight the number of new players in the team’s ranks.

The 26-year-old Makobela, who has been with Cosmos since 2013, penned a two-year contract with the Port Elizabeth-based soccer team. He joins seven other new recruits. Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana player Thabo Nthethe, Gift Motupa from Orlando Pirates, Botswana duo Thatoyaone Kgamanyane and Kabelo Seakanyeng from Gaborone United, Boikanyo Komane from Royal Eagles and former Cape Town All Stars players Ntuxeko Nation Ndlovu and Lucky Setelele have also joined the Chilli Boys.

Having lost some of their key players in Linda Mntambo, Abel Mabaso and Paseka Mako to Orlando Pirates, Chippa were bound to make major upgrades to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.

The United website quoted Makobela as saying that he was thrilled with his move to Chippa.

“I still can’t believe the next step I have taken in my career in joining Chippa United. I am very happy. Thanks to the chairman Chippa Mpengesi and everyone for making this move possible,” he said. “I am delighted to be a Chilli Boy.” Makobela, who is known as “Tebza” in soccer circles, will be joining his new teammates on Saturday when they meet in preparation for the next season.

The player also thanked Jomo Sono for approving his move.

“There was a time when he [Sono] did not entertain any offers from clubs who were looking for my services.

“I want to thank him and everyone at Jomo Cosmos for the contribution they have made to my development.

“I received an encouraging message from Mr Sono himself wishing me all the best at Chippa United.”
