Accused blew whistle on car scam
The youngest member of the Russouw family – accused of killing Petrus Scholtz – blew the whistle on the 2014 insurance scam that saw former Bay spin doctor Roland Williams convicted for fraud.
Wayne Russouw spilt the beans during an investigation by insurance company Santam into a scam in which now-deceased tow truck operator Raven Rungan arranged for Williams’s BMW to be smashed up so it looked as though it had been in an accident.
The scam was cooked up after Williams’s car was taken to Rungan’s V&R Auto towing company in August 2015.
An investigator working for Santam approached Russouw, who had worked for V&R Auto in 2015, after the insurance company became suspicious about the claim.
In a statement, Russouw explained how he was called into a meeting with Rungan and Williams and instructed to damage Williams’s black 2005 BMW 3 Series and make it look like the car was in an accident.
“It was explained to me that the vehicle had an engine problem which was too extensive to repair,” Russouw said.
“Mr Rungan then asked me to ‘make a move’ with this vehicle and to damage it as if it had been involved in an accident to the extent that it would be written off by the insurance company.”
Russouw then acted under the instruction of Rungan, who promised him R2,000 on completing the task.
