Graeme dominate clash

Graeme College held off a strong fightback from Pearson to win their schools rugby encounter 23-17 at Pearson on Saturday.

The visitors dominated most of the opening exchanges to take a 13-0 lead through two tries and a penalty.

Liam Agnew scored after a well-executed backline move and Bongo Adams dotted down after a maul.

Graeme could not add to their tally. It was the home side who struck back in the closing moments of the first half to make it 13-5 at the break.

In the second half, Graeme scored first through Yanga Bangisa to lead 20-5.

Pearson added a third try to close the gap to 20-17.

Graeme converted a penalty, then had to withstand some pressure from Pearson, breathing a sigh of relief when the final whistle blew.

The honours were shared between the two schools.

The Graeme U14As won 105 in a tightly contested fixture.

The Graeme U16As had to fight hard for their 19-8 win, while the second team edged home 19-12 after defending for most of the game.

The Graeme junior teams had a good outing against Herbert Hurd, Grahamstow­n Primary and Oatlands.

Graeme won all their games against Herbert Hurd, with the U13A side taking it 44-0.

HOCKEY

The Graeme hockey side were outstandin­g on Saturday, beating Victoria Park 5-3.

Despite a flat first half, they went into the break 1-1.

The second half started with Graeme carrying the momentum from the first, but VP scored on the counteratt­ack to take the lead again.

Graeme struck back with a well-executed penalty corner to make it 2-2.

Three more goals took the game away from VP in a sensationa­l period of play.

VP scored towards the end to make the final score 5-3.

The second team found the day tough, going down 4-1 to Pearson after being 1-1 at halftime.

The U15 side lost 7-0 to a strong Pearson U14A side, while the U13A team lost 2-0 to St Andrew’s U13B on Friday.
