West Lake wrote a new page in their history books when they were crowned the Northern Areas Football Association premier league champions at the weekend.

Despite having their Saturday game postponed, they were back on the grass a day later to wrap up the title, finishing the job they came so close to achieving a season ago.

The Salt Lake outfit confirmed their status as champions with a 3-0 win over relegation-threatened Shamrocks.

Club chair Michael Bloemiers said the team’s achievement was special as they last won the title in 1995, under Eugene Fortuin.

He hailed the work done by coach Lionel Terblanche, whom he described as a disciplinarian who got the team to work together.

“He has done wonders with the team,” Bloemiers said.

“He never slacks when it comes to things like physical fitness and getting the team to play the way he wants.

“I would say he was a driving force behind the team’s success.”

Bloemiers said the club’s executive structure also needed to be recognised for the work it did behind the scenes to bring success to the club.

Fairview Rovers, who are third on the log, can end second if they win their remaining two games. At the foot of the table, three teams could join Saints on the relegation bus.

With one match left, Celtic’s future hinges on the results by the clubs immediately below them, with both Shamrocks and Rangers having games in hand.
