NMU to host New Music Indaba

-

Nelson Mandela University and NewMusicSA are collaborating on a New Music Indaba, to be held at the South Campus from Friday to Sunday, October 5 to 7.

There are concerts each evening in the South Campus Auditorium.

The indaba aims at reflecting on new concert music that is either by a South African composer or has a strong connection with Africa in general and SA in particular, or both.

There will be talks and workshops during the day that will serve as an introduction to the pieces being performed during the evening concerts.

It will provide an opportunity for those attending to ask the composers questions about their work.

The concert line-up is:

● Friday: Elmarie van der Vyver (viola) and Mathilda Hornsveld (piano);

● Saturday: NMU composition students will host a concert/ workshop in the afternoon and in the evening Dominic Daula will give a piano recital;

● Sunday: A chamber concert entitled Tribute to Madiba, with two works In Honour of Madiba and The Passing of an Icon by Malcolm Dedman. Other pieces will also be played.

Many of the pieces to be played at the concerts will be world premières.

Fuller details on the programme are available from the university’s music department.

Tickets are R50 (R30 for pensioners and R20 for nonmusic students).

● Further information available from the Music Department, 041 504 2250 (office) and tickets can be purchased at the door.
