About 17 protesters are killed and an Irish nun is stoned to death. 1989 The restriction order on Rivonia trialist Govan Mbeki is lifted. 1993 Ciskei military strongman Brigadier Joshua Oupa Gqozo goes on trial on charges of murder or incitement to murder, relating to the killing of Lieutenant Charles Sebe during a coup attempt in 1991. 2008 Singer Miriam Makeba (Mama Africa), pictured, dies aged 76.
