Regional executive committee visits northern areas

- Nomazima Nkosi

The ANC’s regional executive committee embarked on a door-to-door campaign in Nelson Mandela Bay’s northern areas on Sunday.

The campaign started off in ward 10, in one of Malabar’s more impoverished areas, where ANC councillor and member of the mayoral committee Andile Lungisa said people were living in squalid conditions.

“We discovered horrors there, with people living under difficult circumstances – mothers and their children in shacks and general poverty,” he said.

The group also visited the Elizabeth Stuurman old age home in Malabar where residents complained about going for months on end without electricity.

Lungisa was accompanied by ANC acting chair Phumzile Tshuni and human settlements political head Andile Mfunda.

“We also visited ward 11, an area that is dominated by gangsters. It’s a chaotic situation,” Lungisa said.

“Going forward, our concentration will be on the northern areas. We want to encourage the municipality to focus on the northern areas when doing the adjustment budgets.

“This door-to-door [campaign] has been eye-opening because it’s why people of the northern areas complained they’ve been neglected.”

He said they would continue with the door-to-door visits next weekend.
