Kwaito duo performs in Bay

- Zamandulo Malonde

Port Elizabeth will jam to SA kwaito duo Vetkuk and Mahoota’s latest album Local Everywhere on Sunday December 9.

With more than 17 years in the industry and five original albums later, the duo has amassed many fans and, although they had not released an album since 2012, the drop of Local Everywhere in July proved Vetkuk and Mahoota still had it.

“I’d already been in the industry for 24 years when [Mahoota] joined me, and we formed Vetkuk and Mahoota 17 years ago,” Vetkuk said.

Since releasing the album Dinaledi six years ago, the musicians have released singles like Khabalenja, Jehova, Stokvel

and Uthando Lokudlala.

The tunes featured the likes of Cassper Nyovest, Lady Zamar, Nokwazi, AB Crazy and other African musicians.

Local Everywhere was welcomed with critical acclaim by fans who were already tirelessly jamming to Ziwa Murtu ,a Gqom single off the album featuring Kwesta.

On how they manage to keep relevant and cater for different generations, Vetkuk said: “It takes a lot to build a brand but it’s very easy to tarnish it. We take our brand very seriously from the way we present ourselves to professionalism and performing.

“We respect our craft and our fans by being consistent in what we deliver,” he said.

The duo play various genres from classics, gqom, kwaito and more.

● Vetkuk and Mahoota will perform at Hello December at Kwano’s Meat Corner and at Monde’s in Motherwell later on Sunday.
