Firefighters kept busy

The Herald (South Africa) - - News - – Gareth Wilson

Firefighters tackled a blaze in a vacant building in North End on Saturday.

The fire, which started at about 1pm, was extinguished within an hour. The cause was not yet known.

On Sunday, firefighters responded to 15 calls in the metro, mostly vegetation fires.

In the afternoon, a fire broke out in dense bush between Summerstrand and Walmer, near the airport.

Acting metro fire chief Wayne Hendricks said wind and the terrain, which made it difficult for vehicles to get to the flames, hampered efforts to extinguish the blaze.

Firefighters from the airport had also been alerted to assist with blocking its progress..

Other fires were in Kwazakhele, Strelitzia Park, Rocklands, Schauderville, Redhouse, Wells Estate and Gelvandale.

Hendricks said that by 6pm most fires had been extinguished, but the Walmer bush fire was still burning.
