ANC Bay leadership decision final

ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule is calling on party members in Nelson Mandela Bay to focus on attracting more votes for the party, as the decision to disband the Port Elizabeth structure is final.

The party’s national executive endorsed the disbanding of the troubled regional executive structure in October, following reports of deep-rooted divisions in the ANC's structures in the region.

The region wrote to Magashule, appealing against the disbanding, and he initially responded that a moratorium had been placed on dissolving regions.

At the weekend, however, Magashule confirmed that the Nelson Mandela Bay region is disbanded. Magashule said: “We corrected that after engagements with the provincial executive and the region.

“We also received instructions from the national executive (NEC).

“There is a standing NEC decision that they are disbanded.”

ANC provincial chair Oscar Mabuyane had previously said that the provincial executive would prioritise the troubled region. Mabuyane said his executive and the task team in the region were working hard to get the region back on track.

“It has been very sad for an area that has contributed very much in the struggle for the liberation of our people, the instability that continues there.”

The disbanding comes on the eve of the May election. –
