One killed in north­ern ar­eas gang shoot­ings

One per­son was killed and two oth­ers es­caped un­harmed in two sep­a­rate gang-re­lated shoot­ings over the week­end.

In one of the shoot­ings Lu­cian Mitchell, 23, was found dead at the cor­ner of Bell and Gail streets, He­len­vale, at 6.45pm on Fri­day, po­lice spokesper­son Colonel Priscilla Naidu said on Sun­day.

Mitchell had sus­tained sev­eral gun­shot wounds to the up­per body.

“It is al­leged that Mitchell was af­fil­i­ated to the Up­stand Dogs,” she said.

On Sun­day, at about 1am, two peo­ple were shot at by uniden­ti­fied men in Lin­gelihle Street, Bethels­dorp.

Naidu said the names of the pair who were shot at were be­ing with­held for their safety.

In a sep­a­rate in­ci­dent at 11am on Sun­day, po­lice re­cov­ered a stolen firearm while pa­trolling a gang hot spot area in Klein­skool, Bethels­dorp.

Pa­trolling po­lice saw a man sit­ting in Cer­a­to­nia Street. When he saw them he ran off, throw­ing a 9mm pis­tol into the yard of a house. Naidu said: “The firearm was re­ported stolen in the Swartkops area in Oc­to­ber 2010.”

All three cases are be­ing in­ves­ti­gated by the Provin­cial Gang Unit.
