One killed in northern areas gang shootings
One person was killed and two others escaped unharmed in two separate gang-related shootings over the weekend.
In one of the shootings Lucian Mitchell, 23, was found dead at the corner of Bell and Gail streets, Helenvale, at 6.45pm on Friday, police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said on Sunday.
Mitchell had sustained several gunshot wounds to the upper body.
“It is alleged that Mitchell was affiliated to the Upstand Dogs,” she said.
On Sunday, at about 1am, two people were shot at by unidentified men in Lingelihle Street, Bethelsdorp.
Naidu said the names of the pair who were shot at were being withheld for their safety.
In a separate incident at 11am on Sunday, police recovered a stolen firearm while patrolling a gang hot spot area in Kleinskool, Bethelsdorp.
Patrolling police saw a man sitting in Ceratonia Street. When he saw them he ran off, throwing a 9mm pistol into the yard of a house. Naidu said: “The firearm was reported stolen in the Swartkops area in October 2010.”
All three cases are being investigated by the Provincial Gang Unit.
