KEEP LIBRARIES OPEN IN HOLIDAYS

The NMBM continues with its deliberate policy of producing ignorant and illiterate citizens. Why are the city libraries closed from December 21 to January 14? That is the time they must be open to allow reading opportunities for all the pupils on holiday. Shame on the city managers for this idiotic decision. ECKART

KOLISI QUIZZED ON QUOTAS

Siya Kolisi’s statement regarding quotas is correct. The Springboks should be banned from world rugby as in the ‘60s until free of political interference. BOB Siya Kolisi for president.

HENDRI, BLUEWATER BAY, PORT ELIZABETH “Siya Kolisi article raises more questions” (January 10): hey Mike, Kolisi was in the Grey hostel. Bodas eat all day. MAD MOLLY

LURING PEOPLE TO VOTE ANC

I’m so irritated by this coalition, whatever you may call it, at the NMBM. The only thing it is doing is abusing its authority by trying to lure people to vote for the already failed ANC government. I wish that the DA can came into power. What SA people deserve is better living in their country.

PRINT DAM LEVELS WITH WEATHER

Perhaps The Herald could consider printing the level of our dams in the weather section. I’m sure our readers would find this more informative than “Shipping in PE harbour”. MIKE, BRYMORE, PORT ELIZABETH

PUPILS SENT HOME

“Bad hair day for Bethelsdorp pupils” (January 10): Bethelsdorp principal Ralph Jacobus, well done for sending pupils home. On the first day of school your hair should be short, neat and presentable, and you look like a pupil and not a model.

CONCERNED PARENT So when a Bethelsdorp school principal sends Bethelsdorp pupils home for bad hair, the education department says it's within his right, and there’s no EFF, ANC or BLF trying to burn down the school, but when a former model C school does it, it's racist. Just shows who the hypocritical racists actually are. AV C, UITENHAGE

BETTER CASH POINT

Jimmy Manyi has jumped ship and joined the ATM. A better cash point, evidently!

SEE PAST RACE

If people stop saying “black or white”, there won’t be a problem. We are a rainbow nation as per Nelson Mandela. Who cares what colour people are. Journalists especially, try it and see what happens! LL

HOW TO INCREASE ATTENDANCE

The metro sponsors Chippa United with R15m of the ratepayers’ monies, but they play games in East London. What a joke.

EP Kings are sponsored to the same value and play at Madibaz Stadium.

In February Cape Town Stadium will have a double-header rugby game. Why can’t we have the other unions all playing in our stadium on a day? Imagine the support and vibe we will have, but that is wishful thinking. A world-class venue underutilised. Shame. THE BULL

HEADING FOR RELEGATION

Viva Chippa United! Viva self-destruct! Viva the Chippa joke! Hallo relegation. Laugh out loud. GORDON UPTON

REPLIES TO READERS’ COMMENTS

Just asking (“Traffic department closes early”, January 10), when you state that the traffic department closes before the allotted time you are not asking a question, your are making a statement. Perhaps your byline should be “Just saying”.

V BUSSY

Angi Jones (“Results columns eye-opener”, January 9), one of the problems you talked about is overcrowding in the classrooms. But even when you were an EDO [education development officer] you knew the department turned a blind eye to the principals in the northern areas who did not abide by the 36 pupils to one teacher rule because they wanted inflated salaries.

TEACHER

“Maimane’s promises no good” (January 9): to the ANC supporter, you should know, because your party is a master when it comes to no-good promises and looting every cent they can lay their hands on.

POOR SUFFERING

SAPS and loan sharks collude to reinforce and sustain the frontiers of poverty. Abuse of taxpayers' revenue. Advance the poor.

FORCES OF CHAOS AT WORK

It is becoming more common lately that there are forces at work that are causing chaos and destruction in this country, the number of violent incidents and mysterious fires that have occurred. The burning of schools, forests and farmlands, farm murders and attacks on civilians in homes and in the streets.

We have violence and anarchy with total disregard for life. The brutality of attacks is barbaric and savage. In fact this country has become a totally lawless state with ineffective governance and law enforcement. VERNON COHEN

CUT DOWN ON PARTY SPENDING

For a party that oftentimes can’t pay its bills, one cannot understand the ANC's big splurge on its birthday. Milestones are usually in 10-year cycles, not every year. Are we going to see this indecent spending every year? Rather spend this money on the poor or improving services. Fruit juice for children rather than Johnny Walker Black for puffed-up politicians. MALCOLM DODDS

WHY SEPARATE PUPILS?

Why were these poor little white kids segregated from their black school chums?

CRAZY DAISY

SCHOOL DISMANTLED

Regarding the school numbers remark by Richard Draai (“Falling through the cracks”, January 11), some may have forgotten that a school was dismantled brick by brick just off Uitenhage and Perseverance roads. You the community allowed this to happen! Never mind the vandalism at other schools.
