Scribantes in driving seat
The Eastern Province motor racing season started in style with a full car and bike regional race day at Port Elizabeth’s Aldo Scribante Racetrack on Saturday and it was the Scribante family who came to the fore as the new-look family team dominated.
Silvio Scribante took to his father Celso’s former production car racing Audi S5 like a duck to water to take the cardtopping EP Regional Saloons pole position over brother and teammate Aldo Scribante’s similar machine and Bevan Schwartz’s Corvette.
Silvio then led away until Aldo found a way past to take the win from Silvio, Davidson, Schwartz and Class B frontrunners Deon Slabbert (Polo) and Class C winner Rufus Neethling (BMW).
The second race was redflagged and restarted after five laps, with Aldo Scribante taking the first half and Silvio the second (Silvio took it on aggregate from Davidson, Schwartz, Slabbert and reigning BMSC champion Gordon Nolan’s Polo). Silvio then closed off with a race three win over Davidson, Aldo, Schwartz, Slabbert and Neethling.
So, Silvio Scribante took the day in the end, beating brother Aldo, Schwartz, Slabbert and Neethling overall. Silvio also took Class A, while Slabbert took Class B for the day and Neethling won Class C; Stephan Aucamp (BMW) Class D, Daniel Bright’s Golf took Class E and Wickus Basson (BMW) won Class F.
There was also great twowheel action as several Cape Town riders made the trip. Kewyn Snyman (Kawasaki 600) took all three Unlimited, 600cc and Masters race wins from Jared Schultz (Yamaha 600). Historic rider Jaco Scholtz (Suzuki) beat 400 winner Chad Bilsbury (Honda) two races to one to take the other Historic/PSP & Breakfast Run/Masters motorcycle day overall from 300 lass Jessica Howden (Yamaha), Historics man Malcolm Burrows (Suzuki) and the Honda 400s of Ray and Mattie Wood.
Back on four wheels, Rudolf de Vos steered his Chevy Can Am to the opening AMSC Coastal Challenge & Historic & Classic Saloons race victory over Shaun Rudolph (Escort), Deon Gouws (Kadett), Rane Berry (Skyline), Anton Ehlers (Escort) and Darryn Vice’s Anglia.
Rudolph took both races two and three from Gouws, Berry, Ehlers, Vice and Gordon Bennett (Rekord), with those six ending in the same order in both later races and overall.
The second round of the EP championship is on March 9.
