AN EARLY APRIL FOOLS’ JOKE?

“Black magic”? Was this headline (“‘Black magic’ blamed for hostel fires”, March 5) an early April Fools’ joke or has The Herald been taken over by sangomas? I think my R220pm should be better spent on “medicinal boom”. SANDY

IRONIC SITUATION

It’s rather ironic. Electricity is going up by 13.8%, but Eskom cannot guarantee supply. Notwithstanding the fact that the president is adamant that he will create jobs and grow the economy. Massively ironic.

GORDON UPTON

RIORDAN IN COUNCIL

Really missed comrade Rory Riordan’s bleating in The Herald. Nice to see him back (“Council got through long agenda”, March 5).

READER Rory Riordan, you have been an inspiration for honest politics in PE for more than three decades. What has happened to your ethics by now supporting convicted criminals as councillors in our city? You historically always took the high road, nowadays you keep quiet about corruption by ANC politicians. What has happened to you?

REPLIES TO OTHER COMMENTS

Dear Mr Frahm and Reader (“Not a sunset”, March 8). The clue is in the word evening. My husband and I were having supper in the harbour when the picture was taken at exactly 7pm. To be 100% accurate, that was the moon rising and reflecting on the water. The sunset can in fact be seen in the sky surrounding it.

And yes, I still remember basic geography taught to me in school that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. I’m not aware of a seafood breakfast at the Angling Club at sunrise.

VIRGINIA BUSSY Advice to SABC (“Start afresh”, March 8): the only thing I ever watch on SABC is the news. However, if Gary Good’s advice on outstanding fines by licence holders be taken, I would be willing to pay for the licence. I will never pay for the SABC’s poor programming of the past 20 years or so.

HERALD TEAM DOING GREAT JOB

I think our editor and her team are doing a great job. To be a journalist in these times is no easy feat given the latest onslaught on Karima Brown. Content of the paper is varied, interesting, fair and of a high standard. Thanks for introducing the Monday column of articles from our church leaders. The editorial comment is a mustread. CHARGE ECONOMIC TRAITORS

What the Guptas, Zumas, Watsons and associates have done to this country and its defenceless victims – that’s you and me – is treason. They must be charged accordingly.

Now Cyril Ramaphosa, speaking for the ANC, wants to nationalise the Reserve Bank. VBS was looted from the inside without the need for a gun and mask! DISGUSTED

WHY CAN SOAPIE?

Would the SABC please explain as to why the showing of the long-running and most popular soapie, The Bold and the Beautiful, has been discontinued without any explanation to millions of viewers in SA? Surely those of us who pay our television licence are entitled to be given a reason as to why this decision has been taken by the SABC! DISAPPOINTED AND ANNOYED

TRANSNET, CATCH A WAKE-UP CALL

Does it make economic sense that we Port Elizabethans have to travel to Durban and Cape Town to embark on these cruises when the ships dock in the PE harbour, as indicated in the photo. Come on Transnet, wake up. You want to improve tourism in our city. Catch a wake-up, you are useless. You need a bomb under your butt.

TRAVELLER

CAN ONLY LAUD FALL OF APARTHEID

When Cyril Ramaphosa stated that SA was in a far better state than in 1994 at the parliamentary Q&A I almost puked. I was under the impression that one was under oath when in parliament. Is he unaware of Eskom, every SOE, lawlessness, corruption, murder, rape and a severely diminished economy, just to name a few? All the ANC can celebrate is the collapse of apartheid. What a useless bunch.

NARROW SPORTS DEVELOPMENT

There’s a narrow concept of sport development. On Saturday I watched the top eight or super eight schools swimmers in the Newton Park pool. There was no school from the townships or northern areas.

Two months back Port Elizabeth was hosting TSA junior super right. Same story, no schools from the townships and northern areas. The problem starts with our government and the list of sporting codes that are very few.

SABC and local radio station Umhlobo Wenene have bad sport production, there is no balance, creativity or excitement in their sports production. MBULELO LUGOGWANA

WHAT’S THIS OBJECT?

Found in park in Gelvan Park. Just wondering if people are aware of this being around and wondering what it’s being used for. Looks dangerous by the skeleton on it.

DON’T GIVE EFF PUBLICITY

Why do media report all about the EFF? Ignore it, do not put it on TV or in the papers. Julius Malema is using you for his own game. He loves seeing his name in the papers and on TV. ERROL
