Busy weekend for Alex
The Alexander Road sports teams competed in a number of festivals played in the Eastern Cape over the weekend.
The rugby team took part in the annual Despatch festival, claiming a last-minute 12-7 win in their only match against Bergsig of Uitenhage.
The first netball side struggled to find early-season form and their best results came against Daniel Pienaar (11-5) and Volkskool (11-6).
The girls’ and boys’ hockey sides travelled to East London to compete in their respective festivals.
The girls’ team played in the Gregg Beling Festival and proved to be a difficult side to beat, winning 4-0 against Queenstown Girls’ High and securing goalless draws against Stirling and Cambridge.
The boys’ first team lost their opening match 2-0 to Dale at the Tony Godding festival, but bounced back on Saturday morning with a sparkling 2-1 win against Stirling.
However, they lost their remaining two matches against East London schools Selborne and Merrifield.
● The rain did little to dampen spirits during the Alex Sport Festival on Friday and Saturday when almost 600 pupils from schools in Port Elizabeth, Makhanda, Uitenhage and Humansdorp descended on the school’s sports grounds for the inaugural event.
Alex played host to U14 boys’ and girls’ hockey, rugby and girls’ soccer, and the participating schools made use of this festival to give their young players an early run before the start of the season.
The rain interrupted the proceedings on the courts and organisers felt it best to cancel the netball.
The festival gave the players the opportunity to compete against some formidable and unfamiliar opposition, testing their intensity, character and endurance. “We are happy that we have successfully put together such a unique festival of sport, one that continues to grow and build lasting relationships with like-minded schools,” sports festival organiser Lawton de Klerk said.
“The festival provided healthy competition and sportsmanship and matches were played in a friendly spirit.”
