UFH SAVAGERY

All those disgusting, brutal Fort Hare students should be brought to book (Students hack chunks of meat off living cows, August 23)! Educated human beings do not savage animals like that. Just shows the standard of the education in our public schools. I am ashamed for Fort Hare and SA.

GEYSER LIKE FERRARI

To try to explain the geyser logic to Pauline Slater (August 22), let’s compare it hypothetically to you or I buying an expensive Ferrari, which every now and then we take to the race track, and “put foot” at the high speeds it’s capable of. Even though 90% of the time we drive it at the much slower speed limits on the roads, we still pay full price for the car. If we want to save money, we need to buy a smaller car. Similarly many municipalities are trying to do the same thing by switching off geysers collectively at certain peak power times (ie “race track” times) thus being able to buy a “smaller car” from Eskom (which also charges for the maximum demand facility even though most of the time it’s not used), and in principle then saving us all money.

SOUND JUDGMENT?

I have sometimes wondered what judges and magistrates have thought of their colleagues’ judgments. Are they not able to voice their objections internally and challenge these findings? The findings of the [retired judge Willie] Seriti arms deal inquiry have only now been declared null and void by the man’s colleagues in the high court. The public at large have been the losers as usual. And where to from here?

WHY NO SKINNERBEK?

What’s happened to our favourite “unidentified” gossip gal who used to write some enlightening articles in our Friday Herald about her travels to our local jols around PE and the country? Missing her frankness.

NHI DOOMED

NHI [National Health Insurance] – like the driver demerit system – will never work in this country. The national medical scheme has been depleted and equipment stolen. Driving demerit will be applied to people with permanent addresses. Taxis will continue to be untouched by the law. Rather sell off SAA, which is costing taxpayers.

BAD MOVE

How many billions will it take to move the airport? A waste of time and money.

IMMIGRANT DILEMMA

A lot of illegal immigrants are flocking into our country without any control to regulate the situation. The police raids conducted in Gauteng must be carried out nationwide because our country is in crisis – 10,000 foreigners were caught and would probably be deported to their countries. However, there’s still a lot of illegal immigrants at large.
