Citizens ease relegation fears

-

Cape Town City beat Bloemfontein Celtic 2-0 at Athlone Stadium yesterday afternoon to ease their Absa Premiership relegation fears.

Goals from Thabo Nodada and Bradley Ralani spearheaded the Citizens to victory and up to 10th place on the log standings, four points clear of the relegation zone.

Celtic remain in ninth place. The hosts opened the scoring in the 22nd minute as Nodada continued his scoring form.

Ralani teed up the dynamic midfielder on the edge of the area and he made no mistake, curling the ball home to hand the hosts an early lead.

The Citizens duly doubled their advantage on the cusp of halftime.

Meanwhile, SuperSport United moved up to third place on the standings after a 2-0 win over Highlands Park at the Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa.

First-half goals from Aubrey Modiba and Bradley Grobler sealed all three points for Matsatsantsa as they keep their slim title hopes alive.

The defeat leaves Highlands in eighth place.

SuperSport dominated the early exchanges and opened the scoring with 23 minutes on the clock.

A neat ball from Grobler unleashed Guily Manziba down the right flank and the Democratic Republic of Congo winger picked out Modiba, who volleyed home into an empty net with Marlon Heugh caught out of position.

Grobler doubled the visitors’ lead two minutes before the break.

Poor marking left the forward free at the back post from a Sipho Mbule corner-kick and he made no mistake, nodding home for his 12th league goal of the season.

The Lions of the North tried to find a way back into the game after the interval, but SuperSport went on to claim all three points. —
