Isolation a big challenge Ungerer —

- George Byron byrong@theherald.co.za

The Covid-19 lockdown is a test of character but combative Isuzu Southern Kings scrumhalf Stefan Ungerer is determined to emerge from isolation a better player.

Ungerer is training in isolation after the Guinness PRO14 season was suspended indefinitely because of the pandemic.

“Yes, I have set some goals,” Ungerer said.

“Personally, I want to come back in better shape than when I left.

“Obviously training conditions are a bit different at home but it’s times like these when character is tested.

“It’s all about the work you do when nobody is watching.

“I think every professional athlete should be setting goals in these uncertain times.

“Daily goals of staying active and fit and doing your bit not just for personal gain but in line with what we are trying to achieve as a country.

“We have been very fortunate that our coaching team have been as hands on as possible during the last couple of weeks.

“At the start of the initial two-week isolation, programmes were sent out to all members of the squad.

“As soon as we went into full lockdown, equipment was provided as well as daily training programmes.

“Fitness coach Nadus Niewoudt has also been incredible in providing us with ongoing information regarding training during the lockdown.”

Asked what he thought about a proposed SA Derby League featuring SA’s PRO14 and Super Rugby teams, Ungerer said: “At the moment any rugby would be amazing.

“I think I speak for most of the guys when I say we would love to be in an SA Derby League.

“Having spent time at the Sharks and then at the Pumas, I’ve been lucky to make mates on and off the field and to play against them again would be incredible.

“It would certainly provide us with different challenges, but as a team and a union we would be very excited to be part of something like that.

“It is something that could strengthen SA rugby even more, creating extra internal competition.”

Ungerer said being match fit would be a challenge for all teams if the Derby League got off the ground.

“Match fitness is always a tricky thing,” he said.

“You can have as many weeks as you want in a preseason, but match fitness is still match fitness.

“I know the guys are putting in the hard yards at home doing the work but there is only so much we can do.

“With this being a worldwide pandemic it’s not like certain teams are getting preference and to me it’s about what I’m doing to make sure I’m ready for when our lockdown gets lifted and work can resume as normal.

“I missed a three-week tour at the start of the season due to a slight injury, which is never ideal.

“I absolutely hate being away from the stadium or from the training pitch with the guys, but it’s in everyone’s best interest to stay at home due to the situation we find ourselves in.”

“Stay safe and stay healthy and we look forward to seeing as many supporters back at NMB as soon as possible.”
