- Sivenathi Gosa

Mdantsane DJ Yanga “Yarees” Mabokela has joined the ranks of radio giant Umhlobo Wenene.

He will be doing the Jaiva Mzansi show on Fridays and Saturdays from 10pm to 1am.

“I used to listen to Reggie Solani when he had his slot on TruFM,” Mabokela said.

“He was funny and vibrant, and always came up with topics you could relate to.

“This has been my dream since I was young.

“I can’t even explain the feeling.

“Umhlobo Wenene is turning 60 this year.

“I feel like I have joined at the right time,” he said.

Mabokela, a comedian and professional MC, has been with Mdantsane FM for five years, a stint he described as a “wonderful experience” as it gave him the chance to learn and grow in the radio industry.

“There are many challenges I have endured, such as not having enough finances to support myself.

“But I kept going because I believed in myself. This is what I needed to get where I want to be in the future.”

His advice for those aspiring to be in the industry: “Be sure you love what you are doing.

“Don’t do this for fame. If you don’t have the love and passion for radio, you won’t survive.

“I had to be patient and make sure I listened to the station manager, and learnt more about them and their presenting style, so when I sent in my demo I knew all the right things.”

Mdantsane FM station manager Xabiso Gqirana said Maboleka was always eager to learn and improve his presenting skills.

“He was and still is a very respectful and joyful person who listens and takes instructions, and follows them very well.

“I have no doubt he will do very well wherever he is and will grow further in his life.

“I am very proud of him,” Gqirana said.

Mabokela thanked Mdantsane FM for giving him the grounding to let his talent shine through.

“And thank you to my new home, Umhlobo Wenene FM, for the warm welcome.

“I feel at home already,” Mabokela said.
