PROTESTS ONLY THE START

Kevin Meineke and Malcolm Dodds, these protests are only the start. The oppression has lasted a bit too long and now all hell is breaking loose because the oppressed can only take so much, irrespective of creeds or cultures. Your opinions will soon change. You will very soon be generalising the topic as this is not about colour, creed or culture but about life in general.

WHAT ABOUT COLLINS KHOSA?

SA shows solidarity with George Floyd, but what about Collins Khosa and other lives lost here? All lives matter!

Nerina S

Hypocritical PE public protest for Floyd’s rights, but not a peep about the [alleged] brutal murder of Collins Khosa. Sensation seekers!

Cap, Uitenhage

I agree with Mike Xego — we cannot just think it is OK today that a black car has value and a black man has no value, starting here at home.

ALL LIVES MATTER

Regarding the photos of protesters in Friday’s Herald, perhaps the woman holding the BLM sign should change it to “All Lives Matter” and the two holding the “I can’t breath” signs should change them to “I can’t spell”.

DO LOCKDOWN CHARGES COUNT?

If level 3 and 4 of the lockdown are unconstitutional, and therefore invalid, what happens to the charges levied against those citizens deemed to have transgressed the invalid laws? Surely all fines should be refunded and criminal records expunged? An apology would also be nice.

PROTESTS GETTING HIJACKED

Gordon Upton, you are missing the point. In SA, when protests are started with a valid reason, most are hijacked by criminals to use the time to loot and destroy. It’s been happening for years.

STUCK WITH LOCKDOWN?

“Court rules lockdown regulations unconstitutional.” I am betting the constitution will be suspended and lockdown carries on as normal.

SHIELDS BETTER THAN MASKS

Some of us have been denied access to shops because we were wearing a shield instead of the sickness-inducing masks as advocated by the ANC Covid specialists who have been boring us to tears all day with their monotonous drivel and “deep” insights into the human condition. It has been determined that shields are far more effective and healthier — and more comfortable. When is this bit of wisdom going to permeate the hats and wigs in the Command Council? Or are they too busy picking up stompies?

HELP THE PLANET

I have had much time to pause over this lockdown and to appreciate anew the joy of nature and the amazing biodiversity with which we are blessed. It is thus fitting on World Environment Day, and with World

Ocean Day on June 8, to examine my impact on the planet, and what I can do to sustain it and live in harmony with nature. Every little action helps — from rethinking how much unnecessary waste I produce, to protecting our crucial bees from harmful chemicals, to taking care to reduce pollution, to conserving water ... I realise the list is endless, and a wake-up call to be very aware of the degradation happening to our planet and the envisaged loss of a million species.

PARK DRIVE A MESS

I find it absolutely absurd that Central streets are cleaned daily and that Park Drive, which is also part of Central, looks like a third-world hellhole. Nobody has cleaned the area since the start of lockdown. There are also at least two water leaks in Park Drive, one of which I reported about two weeks ago. Now the municipality wants to increase rates and taxes by an exorbitant rate, obviously just to pay the hordes of councillors who do very little another ludicrous increase in salary. Come on guys, do your duties!

WHERE ARE LOCAL PICS?

What has happened to The Herald photographers? Hardly saw a single local photograph in Thursday’s Herald.

CADRE FUNERAL CONUNDRUM

About the level 3 funeral regulations. What would happen if a top ANC cadre passed away during this period? There are normally 100 blue lights at the funeral!

JANSEN COLUMN HIGHLIGHT

Well said, Prof Jansen. Your articles are always clear, concise and to the point. I never miss your columns for anything.

PEDRO NO ASSET

I wonder how many subscribers Pedro Mzileni has cost The Herald?

DOG’S LIFE

Sometimes it’s good to be a dog. Mine had a grooming yesterday and now looks better than me. Please open the hairdressers.

YET ANOTHER WATER CUT

Shame on the metro. We have just had our fifth water cut during lockdown, including for three days last week. How will people wash and sanitise their hands if they can’t afford to buy water? Surely water trucks should not move around but be stationed to serve all?

FIREARM AMNESTY

I understand that our minister of “short planks” is terribly disappointed that after all the amnesties over the years not a single criminal has handed in his stolen and unlicensed firearm. Good move to extend the amnesty, in fact make it forever, in case they change their minds. Why don’t you use the same methods to confiscate illegal guns from criminals that you use on female motorists who smoke in their cars without a receipt? Ever thought of fitting your face mask with a snorkel?
